Can You Take Caffeine and Creatine Together?

A 2022 systematic review of 10 studies found that creatine loading before a single dose of caffeine did not interfere with caffeine's usual performance benefit. However, when both were taken regularly together over time, findings were mixed: some studies found caffeine interfered with creatine's benefit, some found no interaction, and one found the combination worked better together than creatine alone. The reviewers concluded: "CRE loading does not seem to interfere in the acute effect of CAF. However, chronic SUP of CAF during CRE loading could interfere in the beneficial effect of CRE."
Why it may happen
The review notes possible mechanisms include opposite effects on muscle relaxation time and caffeine-related gastrointestinal distress during concurrent supplementation, without confirming either as the definitive cause.
Practical context
