Melatonin

A hormone supplement used to help with sleep timing, jet lag, and delayed sleep-wake phase disorder.

Supplement

What it is

Melatonin is a hormone the brain produces in response to darkness, helping with the timing of circadian rhythms and sleep. As a supplement, it's used for situations such as jet lag, delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, and pre-surgery anxiety.

How it is commonly taken

For delayed sleep-wake phase disorder, melatonin is typically taken about 1 hour before the desired bedtime. Melatonin may stay active longer in older adults than in younger people, which can cause daytime drowsiness.
