Probiotics
Live microorganisms taken with the intent of providing a health benefit, most commonly for digestive health.
What it is
Probiotics are live microorganisms intended to have health benefits when consumed. The FDA has not approved health claims for probiotics. NCCIH notes that giving probiotics to patients alongside antibiotics has been associated with roughly half the likelihood of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, though no specific timing/spacing interval between probiotic and antibiotic doses is given in that source. The FDA warned in 2023 that probiotics given to premature infants carry a risk of severe, potentially fatal infections in that specific population.
