Vitamins and Minerals That Can Affect Medication Absorption

A supplement and a medication can have no direct pharmacological interaction and still interfere with each other simply by being in your stomach or intestine at the same time. Several common minerals can bind to certain medications before the body has a chance to absorb them.
How this actually works
Divalent and trivalent mineral ions (calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc) can form insoluble complexes with certain drug molecules in the gut -- a process called chelation. The drug is not destroyed, but a meaningful fraction of it never gets absorbed, which can reduce its effectiveness. This is a well-documented mechanism for tetracycline-class antibiotics and for some thyroid medication.
Minerals to know about
- Calcium -- documented to reduce absorption of certain oral antibiotics and of levothyroxine if taken too close together.
- Iron -- similarly documented to interfere with levothyroxine and certain antibiotics when taken at the same time.
- Magnesium -- found in some antacid formulations, with the same absorption-interference pattern for certain antibiotics.
- Zinc -- a class-level documented interaction with tetracycline antibiotics specifically.
The practical fix is usually timing, not avoidance
