Turmeric

A spice and herbal supplement; curcumin is its active, color-giving component, studied for uses such as knee osteoarthritis.

Herbal

What it is

Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family; curcumin is the active component responsible for its color. NCCIH states: "We don't know enough to definitively conclude if turmeric or curcumin is beneficial for any health purposes," though there is some evidence of benefit for knee osteoarthritis. NCCIH also notes that conventional oral turmeric is likely safe in recommended amounts for up to 2-3 months, but that liver damage has been reported with some high-bioavailability turmeric/curcumin formulations.
